Her situation was actually somewhat similar to Mellario’s - both beholden to the Prince of Dorne, women used to certain powers and expectations that are defined and denied by Doran. Why did she never think to write to her mother (or visit her mother) to arrange a marriage with a well-off Norvoshi man? When Arianne thinks Doran is trying to marry her off to an old man, she tries to visit Edmure Tully or Willas Tyrell. Surely she has at least a few memories of her mother that could shape her thoughts? Of course her arc and goals coincide more with her relationship with her father, because Arianne is above all trying to do what’s best for Dorne and be its leader, but she never even thinks about her mother. I think it’s likely Mellario waited at least a few more years before leaving, so Arianne could have been anywhere between 11 and 16. Sansa has memories of her parents when she is that exact age at the start of AGOT (11), and Arya and Bran are both younger (9 and 7, respectively) and yet still have memories of their families. Think of the memories Sansa, Arya, and Bran have of their parents, despite their youth. Arianne would have been 11 at that point. Mellario left her children behind when she returned to Norvos, yes, but that happened at the VERY EARLIEST after Trystane was born. The argument was sort of weirdly suggesting that Arianne has more of a connection to the Rhoynar since she’s Dornish/Rhoynar? Someone called OP out on it and it seemed not to be their intention, but it got me thinking about Arianne’s heritage, and how we have almost no thoughts of her connection to her mother. Saw a post a few days/weeks ago about how it’s narratively unfair that Aegon/Griff is more connected to his Rhoynar heritage than Arianne, since he grew up on the river.
